About this chapter
Disinfection destroys most pathogenic organisms but does not guarantee elimination of all bacterial spores. This chapter covers the three levels of disinfection — high, intermediate, and low — and explains which patient care items require each level based on the Spaulding classification. High-level disinfection (HLD) is required for semi-critical items like endoscopes that contact mucous membranes but do not penetrate sterile tissue. You will learn about approved disinfectant chemistries (glutaraldehyde, ortho-phthalaldehyde, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide), proper dilution and contact time requirements, monitoring minimum effective concentration, and the difference between disinfection and sterilization.
