CRCST Chapter 13 Practice Test: Packaging

About this chapter

Packaging maintains the sterility of processed items from the sterilizer to the point of use. This chapter covers the major packaging systems: flat wraps (woven and nonwoven), pouches (paper-plastic peel packs), and rigid sterilization containers. Each system must allow sterilant penetration during processing and provide a microbial barrier afterward. You will learn proper wrapping techniques (sequential or simultaneous), pouch sealing requirements (complete seal width, no channels), container filter and valve maintenance, and labeling requirements (date, sterilizer number, cycle number, initials). The chapter also covers package material compatibility with different sterilization methods — not all materials work with all processes. Correct packaging selection and technique are essential for maintaining the sterile barrier until use.
