CRCST Certification

The Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential, administered by HSPA, is the industry-standard certification for sterile processing professionals. Here's everything you need to know.

What is the CRCST?

CRCST stands for Certified Registered Central Service Technician. It's the most widely recognized certification for sterile processing professionals in the United States, administered by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM).

The CRCST demonstrates that a technician has the knowledge to safely decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments and medical devices. Many healthcare facilities require or strongly prefer this certification for employment.

Several states — including New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Tennessee — now mandate sterile processing certification by law, making the CRCST effectively required for employment in those states.

The Certification Process

1

Meet eligibility requirements

Complete 400 hours of CS department work experience, or graduate from an HSPA-approved training program. Your employer can verify your hours on the application.

2

Apply through HSPA

Submit your application online with employment verification. Applications are typically approved within 2-4 weeks. Once approved, you have a 90-day window to schedule your exam.

3

Study the 9th Edition manual

The exam is written entirely from the Training Manual for Central Service Technicians, 9th Edition. This is the only official source material you need.

4

Practice with exam-style questions

Supplement your reading with practice questions to identify weak chapters and build confidence with the exam format. Aim for 80%+ on practice before scheduling.

5

Take the exam at a testing center

The exam is administered at Prometric testing centers nationwide. You'll receive your pass/fail result immediately upon completion.

CRCST vs. CBSPD (CSPDT)

There are two certifying bodies for sterile processing technicians: HSPA (which offers the CRCST) and CBSPD (which offers the CSPDT). Both are nationally recognized, but there are differences:

Career Impact

Certification typically results in a pay increase of $2-5/hour over non-certified technicians. Many facilities offer tuition reimbursement for exam fees. Certified technicians also have access to lead and supervisor roles that are closed to non-certified staff.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 6% growth for medical equipment preparers through 2032 — faster than average. As more states adopt certification mandates, demand for certified technicians continues to increase.
