CRCST 400-Hour Requirement

Understanding the hands-on experience requirement: how to complete it, track hours, and get started in sterile processing.

What is the 400-Hour Requirement?

The 400-hour requirement is a mandatory, hands-on work experience prerequisite for CRCST certification. Before you can take the exam, you must complete at least 400 hours of documented work in a sterile processing department.

In Time:

400 hours = approximately 10 weeks at 40 hours/week

In Context:

4-6 months of full-time employment in sterile processing

Why 400 Hours?

Validates practical knowledge: Ensures you've actually worked with instruments, sterilization equipment, and processes

Patient safety: Guarantees technicians have sufficient real-world experience before certification

Industry standard: Set by HSPA to maintain credential credibility

How Hours Are Tracked and Verified

Who Tracks the Hours?

Your employer (the healthcare facility or surgery center) is responsible for documenting and verifying your 400 hours.

  • Your facility's SPD manager or HR department maintains hour records
  • Hours can be tracked via timesheets or facility payroll systems
  • You must provide documentation when submitting your CRCST application

What Counts as Hours?

Valid work hours include:

  • Cleaning and decontaminating instruments
  • Assembling instrument trays and sets
  • Operating sterilization equipment
  • Packaging and wrapping materials
  • Distribution and storage of sterile items

Does NOT count:

  • Administrative or office work unrelated to SPD
  • Classroom or lecture time (though valuable, it's separate from hands-on hours)
  • Break time or administrative downtime

Employer Verification Form

When applying for CRCST, you'll submit:

  • HSPA Verification Form: Your employer signs and submits confirming your 400 hours
  • Documentation: Payroll records, timesheets, or facility records proving hours worked
  • Signature: Your facility manager or HR must sign off on accuracy

Getting Hired as an Entry-Level SPD Tech

The great news: you don't need CRCST certification to start working in sterile processing. Entry-level technician positions are available without certification, allowing you to accumulate your 400 hours while learning on the job.

How to Get Hired Without Certification

1. Look for Entry-Level Positions

Job titles: "Sterile Processing Technician (Entry-Level)," "SPD Tech I," "Sterile Processing Assistant," "Central Service Technician Trainee"

2. Target Hospitals and Surgery Centers

Large healthcare systems, regional hospitals, and surgical centers actively hire entry-level techs and provide on-the-job training

3. High School Diploma or Equivalent

Minimum requirement for most positions. No prior healthcare experience usually needed.

4. Emphasize Willingness to Learn

On your resume and in interviews, emphasize your interest in gaining sterile processing experience and pursuing CRCST certification

5. Ask About Certification Support

Many employers offer tuition reimbursement, study time, or certification bonuses. Ask during interviews.

Typical hiring process: Submit application → Phone screening → In-person interview → Job offer. Most candidates are hired within 1–2 weeks.

Provisional/Concurrent Pathway (Some States)

Some states and employers allow "provisional" certification where you can work while accumulating hours and studying for the exam simultaneously:

  • Work full-time in SPD while completing your 400 hours
  • Study for exam in parallel (evenings/weekends)
  • Take exam as soon as you reach 400 hours
  • Can reduce timeline to 6–8 months total

Check with your state's regulatory board or your employer to see if provisional pathways are available in your area.
