CHL Certification
The Certified Healthcare Leader — the highest certification in the HSPA ladder, designed for SPD supervisors, managers, and directors.
What is CHL?
The CHL (Certified Healthcare Leader) is HSPA's management-level certification for sterile processing professionals who lead teams, manage departments, and oversee quality programs. It replaces the older CHMMC designation.
Unlike the CRCST (technician-level) and CIS/CER (specialist-level), the CHL tests leadership, management, and business skills specific to running an SPD department. It covers budgeting, staffing, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and interdepartmental communication.
Who Should Get CHL?
SPD supervisors and lead technicians moving into management
SPD managers who want to formalize their leadership credentials
Technicians preparing for promotion to supervisor/manager
Directors overseeing multiple processing areas
Anyone targeting SPD department head or director-level roles
